Ten Vows of Samantbhadra

Ten Great Conducts and Vows of Samantabhadra

After having praised the Thus Come One's profound merit and virtue, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Mahasattva told all the Bodhisattvas and Sudhana:

“Good men and good women, if all the Buddhas of the ten directions spoke continuously of the Thus Come One's profound merit and virtue for eons as many as fine motes of dust in ineffable numbers of Buddha Lands, this merit and virtue could not be fully expounded.

Those wishing to perfect the doors of this merit and virtue should cultivate the ten great conducts and vows. What are they?

  • First is to honor and respect all Buddhas;

  • Second is to praise the Thus Come One;

  • Third is to practice the extensive giving of offerings;

  • Fourth is to repent and reform all karmic obstructions;

  • Fifth is to rejoice and follow in merit and virtue;

  • Sixth is to request that the Dharma Wheel be turned;

  • Seventh is to request that the Buddhas remain in the world;

  • Eighth is to follow the Buddha’s teachings always;

  • Ninth is to accord with all living beings evermore;

  • Tenth is to transfer all merit and virtue universally.”

Adoration all Buddhas,

Bodhisattvas and Sages,

Perfect Wisdom-Compassion.
